“Fisher” (circa 1985) SOLD

Artist: Inuk Master Sculptor Aqjangajuk Shaa RCA (1937 – 2019) of Kinngait / Cape Dorset, Nunavut

Materials: Marbled Green Serpentine of Southwest Baffin Island, Caribou Sinew and Caribou antler (species Rangifer tarandus groenlandicus)

Aqjangajuk Shaa, RCA is another renowned Inuk master sculptor whose works have been exhibited and collected around the world. He began carving at the age of 17 and continued up until his recent passing in 2019.

Aqjangajuk’s “Fisher” is a great example of the artist’s style in the mid-1980s. He portrayed Inuit in his work as he imagined them over the centuries; powerful, compact, with strongly Inuit features, pursuing a traditional lifestyle, whether seeking game animals as a hunter or drumdancing to divine their whereabouts as a shaman.

The materials Aqjangajuk used for “Fisher” are the lovely marbled green serpentine of Southwest Baffin Island, caribou antler and caribou sinew, so all materials in this wonderful piece may readily be shipped to the USA or elsewhere.
